Calkins Nature Area

Calkins Nature Area is a truly unique asset to Hardin County. Located between Iowa Falls and Alden, Calkins Nature Area boasts a first rate nature center of over 6,000 square feet which greets you as you enter 76 acres of rolling hills, nestled up to the banks of the Iowa River.

Sac & Fox Overlook

Sac & Fox is a public hunting and recreation area is truly a hidden gem. This area covers 106.16 acres and the scenic overlook on the southern end offers excellent sunset vistas and fall color viewing of the Iowa River Valley. A covered shelter is the perfect location for your special event. Hiking trails are plentiful and will guide you towards the river, through the woods, and around a restored wetland brimming with wildlife. Or, wade upstream through the spring-fed creek and take your time climbing over huge granite boulders and exploring sandbars. This particular area has the unique feature of being located at the junction of 3 major Iowa landform regions: the recently glaciated Des Moines Lobe, the wind-and ice-swept Iowan Erosion Surface, and the heavily dissected Southern Iowa Drift Plain.
