The Hardin County Emergency Management, Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEMD) and the National Weather Service (NWS) will again recognize the last week in March (March 27-31), as Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa. The goal of Severe Weather Awareness Week is to provide Iowans with a better understanding and to increase awareness of the state's spring weather hazards.

“Severe Weather Awareness week is an excellent time to review your own preparedness planning.  Know your risk, have a family communications plan in place, and make sure you have an emergency supply kit ready that can sustain you for the first 72 hours should a disaster strike. There is sometimes little warning when severe weather strikes, take the time now, to prepare your family.”

“Every Building and home needs a NOAA weather radio, replace your batteries now in the event of power loss  so you can still receive the NWS local watch and warning information, put a handheld NOAA radio in your emergency supply kit that you will take with you to shelter.”

“Use this opportunity for a family project, have your children help you gather your emergency supplies and build the kit together, discuss your family communications plan and how you will be able to communicate that you are safe if you are separated when the disaster strikes.”

- Hardin County Emergency Management Coordinator Roxane Warnell

For each day during Severe Weather Awareness Week, a different subject will be featured:

  • Monday - Severe thunderstorms
  • Tuesday - Weather warnings
  • Wednesday - Tornadoes
  • Thursday - Family preparedness
  • Friday - Flash floods

The highlight of the week will be the annual tornado drill, which will take place on Wednesday, March 29, at 10 a.m. Schools, businesses, government employees, military, and individuals are encouraged to participate in the drill.
